Salisbury, N.C. ? The Catawba College Volleyball Team (8-5, 2-2) swept Lenoir-Rhyne University (13-4, 1-1) in South Atlantic Conference play Friday night at Goodman Gymnasium.? The Indians defeated the Bears by scores of 25-16, 25-9 and 25-22.? L-R senior outside hitter Jordan Ledford (Newton, N.C.) led Lenoir-Rhyne with nine kills and eight digs despite the loss.
Sophomore libero Marrissa Church (Statesville, N.C.) added 14 digs and sophomore outside hitter Brooke Christenbury (Statesville, N.C.) finished with five kills and a team-high four blocks in the setback.
Catawba was led by Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, N.C.) with 13 kills while Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, N.C.) finished with a match-high 22 digs in the Indians? sweep of the Bears.
Catawba jumped out early in the first two sets including a 16-4 advantage in the first game.? The Bears fought back and trimmed the advantage to 22-16 but Catawba held on thanks to a pair of L-R attack errors.
Lenoir-Rhyne did take an 11-8 lead in the third set but Catawba strung together a couple of runs and took a five-point lead (24-19) on a kill and ace by Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, Va.).? L-R rattled off three straight points to cut the margin to 24-22 but a kill by Meeks finished the match.
Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Wingate, N.C., to face Wingate on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m., in another league contest.
