Wingate Women's Basketball Takes Down Lenoir-Rhyne, 73-70

Wingate, N.C. ? The Wingate University Women?s Basketball Team (11-8, 4-4) picked up a big South Atlantic Conference victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University (13-5, 6-2), 73-70, Wednesday evening at Cuddy Arena.? L-R fell into a first-place tie in the league standings with Carson-Newman, Catawba and Newberry with the loss.

Wingate?s Kurie Washington (Marion, N.C.) led all scorers with 24 points off the bench while Stacie Rhodes added 18 points as the Bulldogs rallied from a nine-point deficit (62-53) with under six minutes remaining in the contest to take the win and snapping L-R?s three-game winning streak in the process.

Senior guard Jami Safrit (Hickory, N.C.) led the Bears with 16 points including four treys while senior guard Amber Holt (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied 13 points, five rebounds and four assists despite the setback.

Wingate also shot 88 percent (28-of-32) from the free throw line and limited the L-R to just 37 percent shooting (22-of-60) for the contest.

L-R?s leading scorer on the season, sophomore guard Cameron Sealey (Gastonia, N.C.), added 12 points but the Bears remained without a win at Cuddy Arena since the 1999-00 season.

Lenoir-Rhyne plays at Tusculum Saturday in a league match beginning at 2 p.m., while Wingate visits Lincoln Memorial for a SAC contest at 2 p.m., on Saturday as well.
