Lenoir-Rhyne And Wingate Prevail On The First Day Of The 2010 SAC/Conference Carolinas Tip-Off Classic

Hickory, N.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne University (1-1) and Wingate University (1-1) both?won their first games of the season Friday on day one of the 2010 South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Men's Basketball?Tip-Off Classic at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.

Lenoir-Rhyne 70, Limestone 59
L-R senior forward D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) led all scorers with 28 points and established a school record by hitting all 12 free throw attempts in leading the Bears to the win.

Freshman forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.) added 12 points off the bench for Lenoir-Rhyne, who limited Limestone (0-1) to just 27 percent (17-of-64) shooting from the floor.

Limestone, who missed 18 of its first 19 shots, was led by Stewart Clark (Atlanta, Ga.) and Jarrell Douglass (Leesburg, Fla.) with 18 points each as the Saints fell in their 2010-11 season opener.

Lenoir-Rhyne used a 12-0 run early in the first half to build a 36-28 advantage at intermission and never trailed again.

Limestone cut the margin to two points (38-36) with 17:11 left on a jump shot by Douglass but L-R reasserted itself with nine straight points and never saw its lead go under seven points the rest of the way.

L-R also hit 20-of-24 (83 percent) free throw attempts and shot 50 percent (23-of-46) for the game.

Wingate 69, Queens 66
Wingate's Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied a double-double, 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, as the Bulldogs came from behind to defeat to the Royals.

Quan Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) and Mike Tankersley (Hampton, Ga.) added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Bulldogs, who rallied from a 44-31 deficit early in the second half to pick up the win.

Wingate put together a 24-5 run capped off by a lay-up from Tankersley with 8:48 left for a 55-49 advantage and was able to hold on for the win.

Queens (0-2), led by Reggie Hopkins' (Charlotte, N.C.) game-high 16 points, had a chance to tie but a three-point attempt rimmed out as time expired.

Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C.) and Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C.) each scored 13 points in the losing effort for the Royals.

On the final day of the tournament Saturday, Wingate and Limestone play each other at 5 p.m., while Queens and Lenoir-Rhyne face off in the night cap beginning at 7 p.m.
