Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Opens League Play With A 70-57 Win Over Newberry

Newberry, S.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Basketball Team (4-1, 1-0) opened South Atlantic Conference play with a 70-57 victory over Newberry College (1-2, 0-1) Tuesday evening at Eleazer Arena.

Freshman forward Whitney Brinkley (Asheville, N.C.) finished with a team-high 20 points on seven-of-eight shooting while junior guard Cameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.)?tallied a double-double (15 points and 11 rebounds) as the Bears pushed their winning streak to four games.

Sophomore guard Whitley Culler (Mount Airy, N.C.) and freshman forward Alexis Katt (Euharlee, Ga.) added 12 points each for L-R, who won at Newberry for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Helen McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) was the lone player to score in double figures for Newberry, finishing with a game-high 26 points.

The Bears broke open a close contest with just over 13 minutes remaining in regulation.? With the score tied at 41, L-R put together a 17-1 run finished off by a lay-up by Brinkley with 6:34 remaining for a 58-42 advantage and the Bears were never threatened again.

Lenoir-Rhyne also held Newberry to just 35 percent shooting (18-of-52) for the game while connecting on 26-of-36 free throw attempts.

L-R next travels to Aiken, S.C., to face USC Aiken on Monday beginning at 7 p.m.? Newberry, meanwhile, plays Pfeiffer in Misenheimer, N.C., on Saturday at 4 p.m.
