Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men's Basketball Team (2-6, 1-1) ended a five-game losing streak with a 76-71 victory over Newberry College (5-5, 0-2) in a South Atlantic Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
Freshman guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.) and?junior guard Jon Hathcock (Concord, N.C.) each scored a team-high 17 points as the Bears held off a furious Wolves' rally in the second half to preserve the win.
Newberry's Tony Davis (Sarasota, Fla.) tallied a double-double (20 points and 10 rebounds) while Brandon Riley (Baltimore, Md.) added 17 points in the losing effort.
L-R built an 18-point lead (44-26) on a lay-up by freshman guard Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.) with 16:45 remaining in the contest before Newberry began its rally.
The Wolves came all the way back to cut the margin to one at 68-67 on a pair of free throws by Jawuan Lockhart (Washington, D.C.) with 1:41 left but McClure responded with four straight points on two free throws and a lay-up to ice the game for L-R.
Jones finished with 16 points for his third straight game in double figures while Hathcock (13-of-15) and McClure (nine-of-12) came up big at the free throw line.
Lenoir-Rhyne also limited Newberry to just 32 percent (21-of-65) shooting from the field including 18 percent (five-of-28) from behind the three-point line.
Coleman Young (Spartanburg, S.C.) added 12 points and four three-pointers for Newberry, who saw its two-game winning streak snapped.
Lenoir-Rhyne does not play again until Wednesday, December 29, when it travels to Greenwood, S.C., to face Georgia Southwestern in the?Bearcat Holiday?Classic beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Newberry is off until Wednesday, January 5, when it takes on Mars Hill at home in a conference game at 8 p.m.
