Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Ends Slide With A 65-63 Win Over Newberry

Hickory, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men?s Basketball Team (4-17, 2-9) saw its nine-game losing streak snapped with a 65-63 win over Newberry College (8-14, 3-8) Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference game at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.

Bear freshman guard Spenser Sydney (Lincolnton, N.C.) led all scorers with a career-high 16 points while junior forward D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) added 15 points and seven rebounds as L-R rallied from a 34-29 halftime deficit to claim the win.

Newberry, led by Aaron Edwards? (Duluth, Ga.) 14 points, pushed its lead to seven points to start the second half (36-29) before L-R started its rally.

The Bears put together a 16-6 run to take a 45-42 advantage before an Edwards? trey tied the contest at 45 with 13:23 left.

From there, L-R reeled off 11 straight points for a 56-45 lead capped off by a lay-up from freshman forward Matt Kunz (Kernersville, N.C.) at the 7:15 mark of the second half.? Kunz finished with a career-high 12 points and seven rebounds.

Newberry cut the lead to 62-59 on another Edwards? three with 28 seconds left but L-R was able to ice the game with a pair of free throws by Spenser four seconds later.

Newberry?s Stephane Bakinde (Yaounde, Cameroon) and Ray Robinson (Jacksonville, N.C.) added 12 and 10 points, respectively, despite the setback.

Lenoir-Rhyne next hosts Carson-Newman on Wednesday beginning at 8 p.m.? Newberry, meanwhile, returns home to face Catawba on Wednesday at 8 p.m., as well.
