Lenoir-Rhyne Football Overwhelms Chowan, 59-10, In The 2010 Season Opener

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Football Team (1-0) totaled 631 yards of offense en route to a 59-10 win over Chowan University (0-1) Saturday night at Moretz Stadium in the 2010 season opener.

L-R junior quarterback Major Herron (Kingsland, Ga.) ran for three touchdowns as the Bears scored their most points in 16 years.? Lenoir-Rhyne defeated Catawba by a 59-21 score on November 12, 1994, in Salisbury, N.C.

The Bears, which led 42-10 at halftime, also rushed for 513 yards in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

L-R put the game away early with three touchdowns in the first quarter.? L-R senior halfback James Pone (Wilson, N.C.) finished off a five-play, 71-yard drive with a touchdown run from four yards out just 3:18 into the game.

After Herron's one-yard scoring run pushed the Bears' lead to 14-0, Lenoir-Rhyne senior strong safety Carl Brooks (Raleigh, N.C.) stepped in front of a Chowan pass and returned it 25 yards for a score.

Lenoir-Rhyne led 28-0 early in the second quarter on a nine-yard touchdown run by junior halfback Jasper Thomas (High Point, N.C.) before Chowan got on the board with a 32-yard field goal by Joey Gargiulo (Tucker, Ga.).

Herron added two more touchdown runs in the second stanza sandwiched around an 85-yard kickoff return for a score by the Hawks' Tony Goodman (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Lenoir-Rhyne outscored Chowan by a 17-0 count in the second half highlighted by a 44-yard touchdown run from senior fullback Anthony Silvers (Burnsville, N.C.) and redshirt freshman Stuart Jones' (Irmo, S.C.) 49-yard touchdown reception.

Silvers and Herron led Lenoir-Rhyne on the ground with 101 yards each.

On defense, L-R sophomore linebacker Demetrius Green (Cedartown, Ga.) finished with a team-high six tackles and spearheaded a unit that held Chowan to just 164 yards of total offense.

Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home to face Concord next Saturday beginning at 7 p.m., while Chowan plays at The Citadel next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
