Brevard Men's Basketball Outlasts Lenoir-Rhyne, 85-83, In Overtime

Lenoir-Rhyne junior forward Jeff Thomas finished with a career-high 27 points in an 85-83 loss to South Atlantic Conference-foe Brevard Saturday on the road.

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Men's Basketball Team (7-3, 5-1) won its third straight game with an 85-83 win in overtime over Lenoir-Rhyne University (2-11, 1-4) Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference contest at Boshamer Gymnasium.

Brevard's Josh Roper (Charlotte, N.C.) led all scorers with 31 points and hit the game-winning free throws with one second left in overtime?to lift the Tornados to the win.

L-R junior forward Jeff Thomas (Chapel Hill, N.C.) tallied a career-high 27 points while freshman forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.) tallied a double-double, a career-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, in the losing effort.

Brevard led 35-32 at halftime in a contest that featured 11 lead changes.

Lenoir-Rhyne pulled out to its biggest lead of the game at 67-59 with 5:29 remaining on a jump shot by junior guard Jon Hathcock (Concord, N.C.).

Brevard, however, rallied to take a three-point lead late in the contest (74-71) with 1:17 left but Lenoir-Rhyne forced overtime on a lay-up by junior guard Kevin Davis (Charlotte, N.C.) with 19 seconds left tied at 76.

The extra frame featured three ties before Roper's pair from the charity stripe iced the game for the Tornados.

Hathcock added 13 points and hit seven-of-seven free throw attempts for the Bears, who suffered their fifth straight defeat.

Brevard's Gaither Hendrix (Lenoir, N.C.) and Drew Schauss (Green Forks, Ind.) added 17 and 15 points, respectively, as the Tornados remained in the race for the league title.

Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face Carson-Newman on Monday in a league contest beginning at 4:15 p.m.? Brevard takes on Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday at 8 p.m., in Harrogate, Tenn.
