Hickory, N.C. - The Carson-Newman College Women's Basketball Team (6-10, 2-4) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 70-61 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University (6-8, 3-3) Monday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference contest at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
Carson-Newman's Mandy Mendenhall (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) led all scorers with 28 points and tallied nine of the Lady Eagles? final 15 points to seal the win.
Zoriah Williams (Calera, Ala.) added 19 points and a game-high 16 rebounds for Carson-Newman, who held L-R to just 33 percent shooting (22-for-67) in the contest.
Three players scored in double figures for the Bears, led by redshirt freshman guard Caroline Laughter's (Hickory, N.C.) 16 points.
The Lady Eagles held a 30-26?lead at intermission and never trailed after break thanks to Mendenhall's 20 second-half points.? Mendenhall, an All-SAC honoree, also tied a career-high on 10-of-17 shooting.
Carson-Newman was holding a 53-52 advantage with 4:50 left before taking control with a 6-0 run capped off by a pair of free throws by Williams and the lead never got under five points the rest of the way.
Junior guard Cameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) and sophomore forward Precious Elkins (Conyers, Ga.) added 13 points each for the Bears, who were playing their first league game at home after starting the season with five SAC contests on the road.
Lenoir-Rhyne also saw its 16-game South Atlantic Conference Regular Season home winning streak snapped, dating back to the end of the 2007-08 season.
L-R remains at home to face Catawba Wednesday at 6 p.m.? Carson-Newman, meanwhile, travels to Mars Hill, N.C., to take on Mars Hill Wednesday at 6 p.m., as well.
