Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Basketball Team (7-8, 4-3) defeated Catawba College (11-6, 5-2), 60-55, Wednesday evening in a South Atlantic Conference contest at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
Junior guard Cameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) led all scorers with 17 points to go along with seven assists while sophomore forward Precious Elkins (Conyers, Ga.) added 12 points as the Bears defeated the Indians for the seventh straight time.
Dana Hicks (York, S.C.) finished with 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds for Catawba, who came into the game in sole possession of first place in the league standings.
Lenoir-Rhyne opened up a 17-point lead (50-33) with 8:50 remaining in regulation on a jump shot by Elkins but Catawba rallied to cut the lead to 58-55 on a trey by Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA) with 23 seconds left.
However, Elkins iced the game with a free throw?with 13 seconds on the?clock?and?the Bears?were able to hold on for the win.
L-R limited Catawba to just 38 percent (23-for-61) shooting for the game including 19 percent (two-for-11) from behind the three-point line.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Lincoln Memorial on Saturday in a conference contest beginning at 4 p.m.? Catawba, meanwhile, plays at league-foe Newberry Saturday at 2 p.m.
