Limestone Upends L-R, 70-66, In Men's Basketball

Freshman guard A.J. McKenzie finished with 12 points for Lenoir-Rhyne despite a 70-66 loss to Limestone Saturday evening in the 2011 Conference Carolinas/SAC Challenge at the Timken Center in Gaffney, S.C.

Gaffney, S.C. - The Limestone College Men's Basketball Team (2-0) handed Lenoir-Rhyne University (0-2) a 70-66 loss Saturday on the final day of the 2011 Conference Carolinas/South Atlantic Conference Challenge at the Timken Center.

Limestone's Jarrell Douglass (Leesburg, Fla.), a 2011-12 preseason honorable mention All-American, led the way with 27 points and 11 rebounds, both game-highs, while Joe Raga (Lithia, Fla.) added eight points and 11 rebounds for the Saints in the victory.

Three players scored in double figures for Lenoir-Rhyne led by senior forward Jeff Thomas (Chapel Hill, N.C.) with 15 points.? Freshman guards Denzel Dillingham (Hickory, N.C.) and A.J. McKenzie (Gastonia, N.C.) added 12 points each for the Bears, who turned the ball over just four times in the loss.

After Limestone built a 10-point lead (52-42) on a three-pointer by Douglass with 13:04 left in the second half, Lenoir-Rhyne rallied to cut the margin to one on two occasions (54-43 and 56-55) but couldn't take the lead.

Limestone took control again with an 11-4 run capped off by a lay-up by Douglass with 2:38 remaining in the contest and L-R couldn't get within three points the rest of the way.

The Saints also shot 54 percent (25-of-46) from the field and held a 34-23 advantage in rebounding in the victory.

Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Laurinburg, N.C., to face St. Andrews on Wednesday beginning at 7:30 p.m., while Limestone hosts Clayton State on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., as well.
