Mars Hill, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Basketball Team (3-0) stayed undefeated on the year after downing Francis Marion University (0-1), 67-59, Friday night at the Biltmore Farms/Mars Hill Classic inside Stanford Arena.
L-R freshman guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) led all scorers with 23 points to go along with eight rebounds and four three-pointers while senior guard Cameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) added 19 points for the Bears in the win.
Brittany Christian (Raleigh, N.C.) scored a team-high 16 points and Daphne Walker (Jacksonville, Fla.) added 10 points for Francis Marion in the losing effort.
Lenoir-Rhyne took a 27-21 lead into halftime and pushed its advantage to 10 points at 56-46 with just over five minutes remaining in the contest on a lay-up by Sealey.
Francis Marion couldn't get within four points the rest of the way as L-R sank six free throws in the final 54 seconds to hold on for the victory.
The Patriots' T.T. Belcher (Raleigh, N.C.) finished with nine points and 14 rebounds as Francis Marion held a 60-44 advantage on the boards despite the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne also limited Francis Marion to just 25 percent (19-of-76) shooting for the game including 20 percent (eight-of-41) in the first half.
On the final day of the tournament Saturday, Lenoir-Rhyne faces Lindsey Wilson at 3 p.m., while Francis Marion takes on the host school, Mars Hill, beginning at 5 p.m.
