Rock Hill, S.C. - The Wingate Women's Soccer Team (16-3) scored four first-half goals en route to a 4-2 win over Lenoir-Rhyne (17-2) Sunday afternoon at Manchester Meadows to take home the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship.
Four different players scored for the Bulldogs, who gained an automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer playoffs.? The Bears will be seeking an at-large bid to the national tournament.
Lenoir-Rhyne, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, also saw its school-record 16-match winning streak come to an end.
Wingate opened the scoring when Chandler Murphy (Daniels Island, S.C.) found the right corner of the net.? The Bulldogs' Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.), who earned tournament MVP honors, was credited with the assist.
Wingate pushed the lead to 2-0 less than 90 seconds later after A.J. Lightbody (Matthews, N.C.) scored from 18 yards out.
Lenoir-Rhyne cut the deficit in half when two-time SAC Player Of The Year, senior midfielder Catherine Hauck (Lake Mary, Fla.), scored on a free kick in the 31st minute.? The goal was Hauck's 11th of the season.
The Bulldogs, however, regained control with two goals to push the margin to 4-1 entering halftime.? Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) rounded out the scoring for Wingate in the 43rd minute.
Redshirt defender Hanna Kiebel (Parker, Colo.), the SAC Freshman Of The Year, scored the lone goal in the second half with a free kick at the 75:00 mark of the contest but the deficit was too great to overcome.
Wingate goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA) tallied six saves to pick up the win while L-R junior Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) suffered the setback in goal.
Lenoir-Rhyne is in the running for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament.? The NCAA Women?s Soccer Championship field will be announced at 7:30 p.m., on Monday on a live ncaa.com webcast.
Three players earned all-tournament honors for the Bears:? senior forward Laura Linehan (San Diego, Calif.), senior midfielder Mariel Mena (Gainesville, Fla.) and senior defender Jessica Schob (Ione, Calif.).
