Newberry, S.C. - The Newberry College Men's Basketball Team (5-2, 1-0) hit 12 three-pointers en route to a 93-80 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University (1-5, 0-2) Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference game at Eleazer Arena.
The Wolves' Dondray Walker (Fountain Inn, S.C.) led all scorers with 23 points and hit five three-pointers while Shamel Akins (Charlotte, N.C.) added 20 points and finished 11-for-11 from the free throw line for Newberry in the victory.
The Bears were paced by junior forward B.J. Beasley (Charlotte, N.C.) with 19 points and 13 rebounds and?sophomore guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.), who tallied 17 points and connected on five three-pointers as well in the loss.?
Beasley also hit eight-of-nine field goal attempts on the day.
Lenoir-Rhyne cut a 16-point deficit (63-47 with 14:25 remaining) to four points, 66-62, at the 9:49 mark of the second half but Newberry responded with five consecutive points to take back control of the contest capped off by a three-point play from Akins.
The Wolves never let their lead fall under seven points the rest of the way as Newberry finished the game hitting 29-of-35 free throw attempts (82 percent).
L-R freshman guard Denzel Dillingham (Hickory, N.C.), the Bears' leading scorer entering the contest, came off the bench to score 18 points despite the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne next hosts St. Andrews at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m.? Newberry travels to Greeneville, Tenn., to face Tusculum in a South Atlantic Conference game next Saturday at 4 p.m.
