Hickory, N.C. - The Wingate University Men's Basketball Team (13-8, 8-5) handed Lenoir-Rhyne University (2-19, 1-12) a 67-58 loss Wednesday night at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium in a South Atlantic Conference game.
The Bulldogs' Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.), the reigning SAC Player Of The Week, tallied his second straight double-double as he finished with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead Wingate.
Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) added 14 points as Wingate rallied from a 56-53 deficit with just under four minutes remaining to pull out the win and sweep the season series from L-R.
Junior guard Kevin Davis (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied a season-high 19 points to go along?with four treys?while junior forward Jeff Thomas (Chapel Hill, N.C.) added 16 points as the Bears lost 13 straight contests for the first time in school history.
Trailing 56-53 with 3:49 left, the Bulldogs ran off 10 straight points over the next three minutes capped off by pair of free throws by Ethan Kincaid (Morganton, N.C.) for a 63-56 lead en route to the win.
Wingate also finished 85 percent (17-of-20) from the free throw line as the Bulldogs won their third straight game.
Both teams will hit the road for South Atlantic Conference games Saturday.? L-R plays Carson-Newman beginning at 8 p.m., while Wingate takes on Tusculum with a 4 p.m., tip-off.
