Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Comes Back To Defeat Anderson, 3-1

Freshman outside hitter Whitney Brinkley finished with 12 kills and 12 digs in Lenoir-Rhyne's 3-1 victory over Anderson Friday night in the Bears' 2011 home opener at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Volleyball Team (6-4, 1-1) prevailed in its home opener over Anderson University (3-8, 1-1), 3-1, in a South Atlantic Conference match Friday night at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.

The Bears won by scores of 23-25, 25-23, 25-15 and 25-22.

Down a set, Lenoir-Rhyne came back to win the final three to take the contest and also pick up its first league victory of the year.

L-R was led by freshman outside hitter Whitney Brinkley (Asheville, N.C.) with 12 kills and 12 digs while senior outside hitter Brooke Christenbury (Mooresville, N.C.) added eight kills and a team-high 16 digs in the win.

Junior setter Meredith Lutz (Newton, N.C.) dished out 20 assists for the Bears in the conference victory as well.

For Anderson, Shannon Gillespie (Fishers, Ind.) finished with a match-high 16 kills and 14 digs and Meghan Cautero (Naples, Fla.) added 33 assists in the losing effort.

Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home to face Newberry in a conference contest on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.? Anderson, meanwhile, plays on the road against Brevard Saturday at 2 p.m., as well.
