Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Volleyball Team (7-4, 2-1) rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Newberry College (6-5, 1-2), 3-2, Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference match at Shufurd Memorial Gymnasium.
L-R defeated Newberry by scores of 22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15 and 15-11 en route to its second consecutive win.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led by freshman middle blocker Haley Rhyne (Statesville, N.C.) and freshman outside hitter Whitney Brinkley (Asheville, N.C.) with 14 kills each while junior setter Meredith Lutz (Newton, N.C.) added a double-double (22 assists and 14 digs) in the victory.
Newberry lost despite 15 kills from both Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) and Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) and a match-high 49 assists from Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio).
Newberry won the first two sets and were leading by a 16-11 score in the third game but couldn't finish off Lenoir-Rhyne.?
Newberry also saw its three-match winning streak come to an end.
L-R travels to Greeneville, Tenn., to face Tusculum on Tuesday in a South Atlantic Conference match beginning at 7 p.m.? Newberry, meanwhile, returns home to take on Lincoln Memorial in a conference contest on Friday at 7 p.m.
