Hickory, N.C. - The Wingate University Women's Basketball Team (8-5, 2-3) came out on top with a 63-57 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University (11-3, 3-2) Wednesday evening in a South Atlantic Conference game at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
Wingate's Tiffany Brown (Cartersville, Ga.) scored a game-high 13 points while Simone Rutledge (Atlanta, Ga.) added a double-double - 12 points and 11 rebounds - as the Bulldogs snapped a two-game losing streak.
Freshman guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) was the lone player to score in double figures for Lenoir-Rhyne as she finished with 10 points and the Bears saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.
Senior guard Cameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) and junior guard Whitley Culler (Mount Airy, N.C.) added nine points each for L-R, who suffered its first loss at home this season.
Wingate held a 35-32 advantage at intermission and never trailed the rest of the way as the Bulldogs limited the Bears to just 33 percent shooting (19-of-57) for the contest and forced 28 turnovers in the win.
The Bulldogs also held a 46-37 advantage in rebounding and blocked seven shots en route to the victory.
Wingate?opened up a 10-point lead in the second half on a lay-up by Sarah Mollett (Raleigh, N.C.) for a 53-43 advantage at the 9:04 mark of the second half and never let?Lenoir-Rhyne get within six points the rest of the way.
Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home to host Brevard in a South Atlantic Conference game on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m.? Wingate, meanwhile, hosts league-foe Mars Hill Saturday at 2 p.m.
