Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team (6-8, 2-3) won its second consecutive South Atlantic Conference game Wednesday night, 75-71, over Wingate (7-8, 3-2) at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
L-R, which won back-to-back league games for the first time in two years, was led by sophomore forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.).? Jones led all scorers with 20 points while senior forward D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) added 18 points and seven rebounds in the victory.
Four players scored in double figures for Wingate, led by Jaime Vaughn (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Quan Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) with 16 points, despite the loss.
After falling behind by a 4-0 score to start the game, Lenoir-Rhyne reeled off 10 straight points and never trailed again.
Wingate rallied from a 40-33 halftime deficit and cut the lead to one point at 66-65 on a three-pointer by Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) with 3:28 remaining but L-R responded with five straight points.? Matilus finished with 14 points for the Bulldogs.
Trailing 73-71 with 27 seconds left, the Bulldogs had a chance to tie but a jump shot fell short and Blackmon closed the game with a lay-up as time expired.
Lenoir-Rhyne shot 53 percent (31-of-59) from the field while Wingate hit 50 percent (26-of-52) of its shots for the contest.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Brevard in a South Atlantic Conference game Saturday evening at 6 p.m., while Wingate returns home to face Mars Hill in a league contest Saturday afternoon beginning at 4 p.m.
