Salisbury, N.C. -? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Basketball Team (12-4, 4-3) tried to rally from a large first-half deficit but fell short to Catawba College (10-5, 5-2), 64-59, Wednesday evening at Goodman Gymnasium in a South Atlantic Conference game.
Catawba's Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM) led all scorers with 18 points and hit four three-pointers while Nisha Long (Dallas, N.C.) added 16 points to lead the Indians to the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led by junior guard Whitley Culler (Mount Airy, N.C.) with 17 points and nine rebounds and freshman guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) added a double-double, 11 points and 11 rebounds, but the Bears were done in by shooting 25 percent (21-of-83) from the field.
The Indians were in complete control throughout most of the contest as they scored the game's first 10 points and led by as many as 23 points in the first half when Bully hit a lay-up at the 6:37 mark before break for a 31-8 advantage.
Catawba entered intermission with a 41-23 lead and held off a furious Lenoir-Rhyne rally in the second half to snap the Bears' eight-game winning streak against the Indians.
L-R put together a long second-half comeback and cut the margin to three points on two occasions, 59-56 and 62-59, but Long sank a pair of three throws with six seconds left for the game's final two points for Catawba in the win.
The Indians' Dana Hicks (York, S.C.) added a double-double - 10 points and 14 rebounds - but the Bears held a 66-50 edge in rebounding for the game.
Lenoir-Rhyne remains on the road to face Lincoln Memorial in a South Atlantic Conference contest Saturday in Harrogate, Tenn., beginning at 6:00 p.m.? Catawba, meanwhile, remains at home to face league-foe Newberry Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
