Newberry Gets By Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-2, To Advance In The Food Lion SAC Volleyball Tournament

Sophomore Joanna Whitmire finished with 10 kills for L-R in a 3-2 loss to Newberry Friday in the opening round of the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament in Brevard, N.C.

Brevard, N.C. ? Newberry (18-13) advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament with a 3-2 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (19-11) Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round at Boshamer Gymnasium.

Newberry prevailed over L-R by scores of 21-25, 28-26, 25-20, 20-25 and 15-11 and will now play top-seeded Wingate (27-2) in the semifinals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.? Wingate defeated No. 8-seed Anderson (13-17), 3-1, in the first round of play.

Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) led the way with a match-high 22 kills and 26 digs while Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) added 57 assists and 11 digs as Newberry defeated Lenoir-Rhyne for the second time this season.

L-R lost despite a team-high 15 kills from sophomore outside hitter Haley Rhyne (Statesville, N.C.) and 10 kills each from sophomore middle blocker Joanna Whitmire (Brevard, N.C.) and freshman outside hitter Ashley Wells (Lovingston, Va.).

Senior setter Meredith Lutz (Newton, N.C.) also chipped in with 24 assists and 16 digs and sophomore return specialist Emily Culler (Mount Airy, N.C.) totaled a team-high 21 digs in the losing effort for the Bears.

Lenoir-Rhyne, ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Poll, still has an outside shot at a berth in the playoffs.? The selections to the national tournament will be announced on Sunday at 10:00 p.m.
