Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team (17-9, 9-6) swept Carson-Newman (10-14, 4-11), 3-0, on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference match at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
The Bears prevailed over the Eagles by scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-14 and saw their three-match losing streak come to an end.
L-R sophomore outside hitter Haley Rhyne (Statesville, N.C.) led the way with a match-high 10 kills while senior setter Meredith Lutz (Newton, N.C.) added 14 assists and 11 digs in the victory.?
Lutz was honored before the contest as she played in the last home regular season match of her career.
Freshman setter Briana Gottberg (Mooresville, N.C.) tallied 17 assists and freshman outside hitter Morgan Bunker (Mount Airy, N.C.) finished with 19 digs for the Bears, who swept the season series from the Eagles.
Carson-Newman was led by Kiayna O'Neal (Katy, Texas) and Sabina Papala (Laziska Gorne, POLAND) with nine kills each while Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, Tenn.) added 22 assists and 10 digs despite the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne next takes on Brevard on Tuesday in a league match in Brevard, N.C., beginning at 7:00 p.m.? Carson-Newman returns home to face conference-foe Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., as well.
