Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Basketball Team (16-5, 8-4) moved into sole possession of third place in the South Atlantic Conference with a 71-60 victory over Newberry College (12-8, 7-5) Saturday evening at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
L-R senior guard Cameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) led all scorers with a season-high 27 points and was one of four players to score in double figures for the Bears, who won their third straight game.
Newberry was led by Haylee Lepaio's (Bathurst, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA) team-high 21 points and 11 rebounds while Neicey Lewis (Riverdale, Ga.) added 16 points in the losing effort.
Lenoir-Rhyne took a 34-29 advantage entering intermission but Newberry quickly took control at the start of the second half by scoring 10 straight points for a 39-34 lead as the Wolves held the Bears without a point for nearly six-and-a-half minutes.
However, L-R regrouped and a 10-0 run late in the second half put the contest out of reach.? A free throw by sophomore guard Danielle Bongiorno (Wilmington, N.C.) gave the Bears a 65-53 lead with 1:38 remaining, its biggest advantage of the game.? Bongiorno finished with a career-high 13 points.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior guard Whitley Culler (Mount Airy, N.C.) notched her second straight double-double as she finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds and the Bears held the Wolves to just 35 percent shooting (22-of-63) for the game.
L-R faces Wingate on Wednesday on the road in Wingate, N.C., beginning at 6:00 p.m.? Newberry travels to Anderson, S.C., to take on Anderson in a league game at 6:00 p.m.
