Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team (6-4, 3-1) upended 22nd-ranked Wingate (9-2, 1-2), 3-1, Friday evening in a South Atlantic Conference match at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
The Bears prevailed by scores of 25-17, 17-25, 25-18 and 25-22 and defeated the Bulldogs for the first time since the 2006 season.
Wingate also saw its 42-match road winning streak against SAC opponents come to an end in the process.
L-R was led by sophomore outside hitter Haley Rhyne (Statesville, N.C.) with a match-high 13 kills and 11 digs while freshman outside hitter Ashley Wells (Lovingston, Va.) added 12 kills en route to the win.
Senior setter Meredith Lutz (Newton, N.C.) tallied 19 assists and 18 digs and freshman setter Briana Gottberg (Mooresville, N.C.) finished with 22 assists and 11 digs as the Bears handed the Bulldogs their second straight setback after Wingate started the season with nine consecutive wins.
Wingate's Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) totaled 13 kills and Anna Hilton (Hickory, N.C.) finished with 12 kills and 13 digs on the night?in the four-set?loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne steps out of South Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday when the Bears host Queens beginning at 7:00 p.m. Wingate, meanwhile, returns home to face Brevard in a conference contest on Tuesday at Cuddy Arena.? Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
