Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team (16-6, 9-5) downed Brevard (3-19, 2-12), 71-60, Saturday evening in a South Atlantic Conference game at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
L-R junior guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.) led all scorers with 23 points while senior forward B.J. Beasley (Charlotte, N.C.) notched his second straight double-double - 18 points and 13 rebounds - in the victory.
Miles Leathers (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Tornados with 17 points and Gerel Simmons (Accokeek, Md.) added 14 points in the loss.
Brevard jumped out to a 9-1 advantage to start the contest but L-R quickly responded with a 17-3 run capped off by a three-point play from Beasley for an 18-12 advantage with 12:31 remaining in the first half.
Lenoir-Rhyne built a 37-26 halftime lead and Brevard never got within four points the rest of the way.
L-R put the contest out of reach with a 7-0 run finished off by a dunk from freshman forward Rob Noyes (Morganton, N.C.) for a 63-48 lead with 7:40 left and the Bears cruised to the win from there.
Lenoir-Rhyne also held a 40-29 advantage in rebounding and forced Brevard into 15 turnovers as the Bears swept the season series from Brevard and won their second straight game.
In the next round of South Atlantic Conference games, Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Tusculum while Brevard visits Newberry.? Both games are scheduled for Wednesday beginning at 8:00 p.m.
