Lenoir-Rhyne Holds On To Defeat Brevard, 58-53, In Women's Basketball

Lenoir-Rhyne junior guard Krystal Patton finished with 13 points to lead the Bears in a 58-53 victory over Brevard Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference game in Hickory, N.C.

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (15-7, 10-4) remained one game out of first place in the South Atlantic Conference standings with a 58-53 victory over Brevard (5-17, 3-11) Saturday afternoon at Shuford Gymnasium.

L-R junior guard Krystal Patton (Chilhowie, Va.) led the Bears with a team-high 13 points as Lenoir-Rhyne moved to 15-0 all-time against Brevard.

Shelby Wolfe (Pittsboro, N.C.) also scored 13 points in the loss for Brevard, who suffered its third straight defeat.

L-R jumped out of the gate with a 13-2 lead but Brevard slowly came back and took a 23-21 advantage into intermission.

Brevard kept the momentum going after halftime and led by as many as six points on a field goal by Micheala Watkins (Forest City, N.C.) for a 44-38 lead with 9:41 left.? Watkins finished the game with nine points.

However, the Bears put together a 15-4 run to take control again capped off by a field goal from junior guard Danielle Bongiorno (Wilmington, N.C.) as the Bears went ahead by a 53-48 score with just over three minutes left.

Brevard cut the margin to two points on two more occasions, 53-51 and 55-53, but Lenoir-Rhyne was able to hold on for the win.

Sophomore guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) added eight points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Bears, who held a 43-31 edge on the boards in the win.? L-R is one game behind first-place Anderson (17-7, 11-3) in the league race.

Brevard also shot just 33 percent (17-of-52) from the field and was forced into 17 turnovers in the setback.

Lenoir-Rhyne next hosts Tusculum in a conference contest while Brevard stays on the road to face Newberry.? Both games will tip-off at 6:00 p.m., on Wednesday.
