Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore guard Jazmine Charles led all scorers with 18 points in a key 55-53 win over Wingate in a South Atlantic Conference contest Wednesday evening in Hickory, N.C.

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (13-6, 8-3) bounced back to defeat Wingate (10-11, 4-6), 55-53, Wednesday evening at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium to remain in the hunt for the league crown.

L-R sophomore guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points as the Bears snapped a two-game losing streak and swept the season series from the Bulldogs for the first time in 13 years.

Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) and Morgan McGee (Durham, N.C.) each scored 11 points for the Bulldogs, who suffered their second straight setback.

With the win, Lenoir-Rhyne also remained tied for second place in the league standings with Newberry and is one game behind first-place Anderson.

The game remained close throughout, including a 28-28 tie at intermission, but the Bears took the lead for good on a lay-up by junior forward Whitney Brinkley (Asheville, N.C.) at the 7:39 mark of the second half for a 43-42 advantage.

Wingate threatened but could not get within two points the rest of the way as Lenoir-Rhyne held a 41-32 advantage on the boards in the victory.

Junior guard Krystal Patton (Chilhowie, Va.) added nine points for Lenoir-Rhyne, who also limited Wingate to just two-of-12 (17 percent) from behind the three-point line in the second half.

L-R hits the road for the first time in two weeks and will travel to Jefferson City, Tenn., to face Carson-Newman in a league contest while Wingate visits Tusculum.? Both games are scheduled to take place on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
