L-R Men's Basketball Falls To Newberry, 85-83, In The Regular Season Finale

Lenoir-Rhyne junior guard R.J. McClure finished with 20 points in an 85-83 loss to Newberry Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference game at Eleazer Arena in Newberry, S.C.

Newberry, S.C. - The Newberry Men's Basketball Team (14-12, 10-8) ended the regular season on a four-game winning streak with an 85-83 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (18-8, 11-7) Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena.

Mitch Riggs (Langwarrin, Victoria, Australia) scored a team-high 21 points and was one of five players to score in double figures for the Wolves in the victory.

L-R sophomore guard Denzel Dillingham (Hickory, N.C.) led all scorers with 29 points with six treys while junior guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.) added 20 points in the losing effort.

A three-pointer by McClure with 4:59 left gave the Bears a 77-76 lead, their last advantage of the contest.

Newberry responded with a 6-0 run and never trailed again in the game.?

L-R got to within a point at 84-83 with 1:11 left on a pair of free throws by junior guard Jarvis Perry (Willingboro, N.J.) but the Wolves held on.? Lenoir-Rhyne had a chance to win but missed a pair of three-point shots as time ran out.

The Wolves' Dondray Walker (Fountain Inn, S.C.) added 17 points and hit seven free throws on the day as Newberry avenged an earlier setback to Lenoir-Rhyne.

Perry scored 13 points and dished out a team-high six assists for the Bears, who shot 57 percent (31-of-54) for the contest and hit nine three-pointers despite the loss.

In the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Food Lion SAC Men's Basketball Tournament, L-R will be the fifth seed and face fourth-seeded Carson-Newman on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., in Jefferson City, Tenn.? Newberry, the sixth seed, will visit third-seeded Wingate in the conference tournament first round on Wednesday beginning at 7:00 p.m., as well.
