Hickory, N.C. - In the Quarterfinal Round of the 2013 Food Lion SAC Women's Basketball Tournament, second-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne (19-8) held on to beat seventh-seeded Wingate (13-16), 59-57, Wednesday evening at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
L-R advances to the semifinal round to take on Tusculum, the sixth seed, Saturday at 2:30 p.m.? The semifinals take place at Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C.? Tusculum beat Catawba, 53-47, in overtime on the road Wednesday night.
L-R junior guard Krystal Patton (Chilhowie, Va.) finished with a team-high 13 points as the Bears beat the Bulldogs for the third time this season and advanced to the semifinal round for the first time in three years.
Wingate, which had a chance to win but could not get a shot off a time ran out, was led by Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) with a team-high 16 points.
The Bulldogs' Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) added 14 points and five assists as Wingate rallied from a 13-point deficit late in the first half (32-19) to tie the score at 42-all but ultimately came up short.
Wollett hit a three-pointer to cut the margin to one point at 58-57 with 10 seconds left before the Bulldogs got the ball back after Patton connected on a free throw for the Bears but could not get a shot off as time expired.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior guard Caroline Laughter (Hickory, N.C.) added 10 points and junior guard Danielle Bongiorno (Wilmington, N.C.) hit a key three-pointer with 15 seconds left for the Bears, who held a 37-20 edge in rebounding in the win.
Wingate lost despite connecting on 51 percent (22-of-43) of its field goal attempts on the evening but turned the ball over 18 times in the setback.
