Newberry, S.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer Team (11-4-2, 7-3-1) wrapped up the regular season with a 3-1 victory over Newberry (5-10-2, 2-7-2) in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Smith Road Complex.
The Bears scored all three of their goals in the first half – including a league-leading 16th goal of the year by junior forward Ismael Noumansana (Reims, FRANCE) – to lead Lenoir-Rhyne to the win.
The Bears were aided by an own goal just 6:56 into the contest that opened the scoring before senior defender DeJean Charlton (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) gave Lenoir-Rhyne a 2-0 advantage in the 22nd minute off a cross from sophomore forward Marc Fernandez (Barcelona, SPAIN). Fernandez was credited with the assist.
Nousmansana rounded out the scoring for Lenoir-Rhyne with a penalty kick goal at the 27:38 mark of the first half.
Newberry's goal came late in the first half with just over three minutes left when Claus Lehland (Bergen, NORWAY) scored on a corner kick. The second half was scoreless. Lenoir-Rhyne held an 11-8 advantage in shots taken in the victory as well.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior goalkeeper Danilo Pellegrini (Rome, ITALY) – making his first collegiate start – earned the win after making a save while Newberry's Keegan Petersen (Oyster Bay Cove, N.Y.) suffered the loss in goal.
Lenoir-Rhyne will host a Quarterfinal match of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Championship on Tuesday, November 1, at the Moretz Sports – Athletic Complex.
