Newberry Football Takes Down Lenoir-Rhyne, 53-14

Newberry, S.C. – The Newberry Football Team (8-1, 6-0), ranked No. 23 in NCAA Division II, won its eighth straight game with a 53-14 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (2-7, 2-3) Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference game at Setzler Field.

Newberry quarterback Raleigh Yeldell (Edgefield, S.C.) passed for 428 yards and four touchdowns and the Wolves finished with a school-record 729 yards of total offense in the victory.

The Wolves took control right from the start by scoring the game's first 35 points and entered halftime with a 42-7 advantage.  Newberry scored touchdowns on six of its first eight possessions and had 533 yards of offense by intermission.

Lenoir-Rhyne's touchdowns came on a 91-yard kickoff return for a score by redshirt freshman Sherrod Williams (Edison, Ga.) in the second quarter and a three-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Robbie Hooks (Franklinville, N.J.) in the final stanza.  Hooks now has three scores on the season.

Yeldell added a touchdown run while the Wolves' defense limited Lenoir-Rhyne to just 154 yards of total offense.  Newberry's Romelo Doctor (Summerville, S.C.) led the way on the ground with 95 yards and a score as the Wolves clinched at least a share of the South Atlantic Conference Championship.

For the Bears, redshirt freshman quarterback Jarrod Kellar (Shinnston, W.Va.) had 94 yards through the air while senior defensive backs C.J. Cody (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Rodney Singleton (Hawthorne, Fla.) totaled 10 tackles each in the loss.

Lenoir-Rhyne remains on the road to take on Brevard in a South Atlantic Conference game on Saturday, November 5, at 1:00 p.m., in Brevard, N.C.  Newberry travels to Gaffney, S.C., to face Limestone next Saturday beginning at 5:00 p.m.
