Wingate, N.C. – The Wingate Men's Basketball Team (2-3, 1-1) defeated Lenoir-Rhyne (2-2, 1-1) by a 94-82 score on Tuesday evening at Cuddy Arena in a South Atlantic Conference game.
Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) led six players in double figures for the Bulldogs, totaling a game-high 20 points, while Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) notched a double-double – 11 points and 10 rebounds – in the victory as well.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led by junior guard
Reed Lucas (Greensboro, N.C.) with 18 points and three treys while senior guard
Jalen Variste (Baton Rouge, La.) added 17 points but the Bears saw their two-game winning streak come to an end.
Lenoir-Rhyne cut the margin to 55-51 on a lay-up by Reed with 13:49 left but Wingate responded with a pair of baskets and the Bears couldn't get any closer than five points the rest of the way.
Wingate, which snapped a three-game losing streak in the process, hit 23-of-27 free throw attempts and held a 50-28 advantage in the paint. Lee McCall (Indian Land, S.C.) connected on all seven field goal attempts and finished with 16 points in the victory for the Bulldogs as well.
Five players scored in double figures for the Bears including 12 points by senior guard
Darrion Evans (Morganton, N.C.) off the bench but it wasn't enough.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to host Chowan on Sunday at 4:00 p.m., while Wingate faces Augusta University on Sunday at 4:00 p.m., as well in Augusta, Ga.
