Lenoir-Rhyne's Jacob Slagle Named The 2016 South Atlantic Conference Football Scholar-Athlete Of The Year

Rock Hill, S.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne's Jacob Slagle has been named the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Football Scholar-Athlete Of The Year, the league announced earlier today.

Slagle, a senior offensive lineman from Sharpsburg, Ga., wins the award for the second straight year. Slagle earned this honor for his outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, service and leadership.

Slagle has been a starter on the offensive line since the end of his freshman year in 2013. Including his redshirt year, Slagle has been a part of three South Atlantic Conference Championship squads (2012-14), three NCAA Division II Playoff Teams (2012-14) and was a member of the 2013 national finalist team.

As a starter, Slagle helped the Bears lead the nation in rushing in both 2014 (an NCAA Division II single-season rushing record 416.2 yards per game) and 2015 (384.7 yards per game). Slagle's first start of his collegiate career came in Lenoir-Rhyne's 42-14 win over West Chester in a 2013 national semifinal game.

Slagle, a religious development major with a 3.89 grade point average, has named to both the Dean's List and President's List at Lenoir-Rhyne and is a member of the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll. Currently, Slagle is working on his master's degree in counseling (Lenoir-Rhyne's Bridges-To-Dreams Program). Slagle is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District (2014-16) honoree as well.

On campus, Slagle is a member of several Honors Societies including Psi Chi International and Alpha Lambda Delta (Senior Class President) and is a part of Lenoir-Rhyne's Student-Athlete Advisory Council, the Angel Bear Program, the team's leadership council and Campus Crusade For Christ (CRU).

In addition, Slagle is the recipient of both the Honors Trustee Scholarship and Major James Ursano Scholarship and won the Phil Burns Award (given to a rising senior on the team who exhibits a life of Christian Faith, Exemplary Leadership and hard work off and on the field). Slagle has traveled abroad leading mission trips in North and Central America and has volunteered for the Salvation Army.

The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete Of The Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the league's conference championship sports and is voted on by the conference's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee.
