Hickory, N.C. – The Newberry Baseball Team (16-7-1, 3-4) opened a South Atlantic Conference weekend series with Lenoir-Rhyne (16-6, 2-2) with a 3-1 triumph Friday night at Bears Field.
Newberry's Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.) and Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C.) combined to limit the Bears to just one run and six hits in the victory.
The Wolves took the lead for good with a two-run sixth inning. Newberry's Jeff Snead (Cumming, Ga.) scored the game-winning run with the bases loaded on a fielder's choice.
Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.) and JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) both had run-scoring singles for the Wolves in the victory.
Nations improved to 4-0 on the year while Hyman pitched three scoreless innings for his first save on the season.
For Lenoir-Rhyne, sophomore outfielder Marcus Shoemaker (Colfax, N.C.) drove in a run with a single in the fourth inning while sophomore Matt Sullivan (Bristol, Va.) fell to 2-1 after taking the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne's starter, sophomore Austin Hancock (Defiance, Ohio), allowed just one run in five innings of work as well.
Newberry and Lenoir-Rhyne face off in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Bears Field on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m., to wrap up the league series.
