Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Powers By Brevard, 15-4, On The Road

Brevard, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (20-7, 4-3) opened a South Atlantic Conference series with a 15-4 victory over Brevard (10-18, 1-9) Friday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.

Lenoir-Rhyne freshman outfielder Justin Dean (Mauldin, S.C.) hit a two-run home run and finished with four runs batted in while junior infielder David Newcomer (Archdale, N.C.) had a bases-clearing double as part of a six-run sixth inning to lead the Bears to a relatively easy league victory.

Lenoir-Rhyne senior shortstop Matthew De La Rosa (Austin, Texas) also hit his team-leading sixth home run of the year as the Bears scored the final eight runs of the contest.

Brevard's Ryan Smith (Indian Trail, N.C.) led the way offensively for the Tornados with three hits and two runs batted in despite the loss.

Senior designated hitter Will Thompson (Spartanburg, S.C.) added two hits and three runs batted in for the Bears, who scored in all but two innings.

Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Austin Hancock (Defiance, Ohio) improved to 4-0 on the year after striking out eight batters in five innings of work while Brevard's Kyle Pittman (Monroe, N.C.) fell to 1-1 after taking the loss.

The two teams will wrap up the South Atlantic Conference weekend series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Noon in Brevard, N.C.
