Belmont, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (23-8) continued its torrid pace of late with a 13-1 victory over No. 16 Belmont Abbey (24-6-1) Wednesday evening at Abbey Yard in a non-conference, regional contest.
The Bears took control early with a six-run first inning while senior first baseman Colby Dishmond (Statesville, N.C.) and junior third baseman David Newcomer (Archdale, N.C.) both finished with two hits and two runs batted in as Lenoir-Rhyne avenged an earlier loss to Belmont Abbey.
Newcomer had an RBI double as part of a three-run fifth frame as the Bears scored the first nine runs before the Crusaders crossed the plate in putting the contest away.
Dishmond's two-run single highlighted a four-run eighth inning for the Bears while senior shortstop Matthew De La Rosa (Austin, Texas) added three hits and drove in a run, giving him a conference-leading 48 RBI on the season, in the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which improved to 6-1 in its last seven games, finished with 14 hits on the night. Senior Wes McGuire (Richmond, Va.) improved to 1-0 on the year after allowing one run while pitching into the sixth inning and striking out four batters.
For Belmont Abbey, Thomas Yoder (Cary, N.C.) drove in the Crusaders' lone run while Parker MacPhail (Sarasota, Fla.) (0-1) suffered the setback on the mound.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday when the Bears host Tusculum at 6:00 p.m., at Bears Field. Belmont Abbey faces Armstrong State on Tuesday, March 29, in Savannah, Ga., beginning at 2:00 p.m.
