Misenheimer, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (29-13) held off a late charge to down Pfeiffer (17-25), 11-9, Wednesday night at Joe Ferebee Field.
Senior designated hitter Ryan Perkins (Woodruff, S.C.) hit a two-run home run and finished with five runs batted in as the Bears raced to an 8-1 lead and fended off a late rally by the Falcons to take the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior first baseman Colby Dishmond (Statesville, N.C.) hit a solo home run, his team-leading eighth of the season, as the Bears opened the scoring with a six-run fourth inning and defeated the Falcons for the second time this year.
Pfeiffer's Anthony Allende (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) hit a home run and Xavier Rodriguez (Tampa, Fla.) finished with four hits and two runs batted in despite the loss.
The Falcons plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the margin to 8-7 but the Bears responded in the top of the eighth thanks to Perkins' two-run single to take control again. Freshman outfielder Justin Dean (Mauldin, S.C.) added three hits and an RBI for the Bears, who totaled with 15 hits for the night.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Landon Whitson (Marion, N.C.) improved to 4-3 after taking the victory while sophomore Tad Ratliff (Taylorsville, N.C.) pitched the ninth inning for his second save of the year. Pfeiffer's Drew Wilson (Pilot Mountain, N.C.) was tagged with the loss and fell to 2-3 on the season.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday at 6:00 p.m., when the Bears face Wingate in Wingate, N.C. Pfeiffer plays King in Bristol, Tenn., on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
