Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Lacrosse Team (9-4, 7-0) claimed at least a share of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Championship with a 15-7 victory over Lincoln Memorial (6-5, 2-5) Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Moretz Stadium.
Senior midfielder Carson Sterling (Durham, N.C.) scored a game-high six goals including five in the first half as the Bears, ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division II, increased their winning streak to eight contests.
Lenoir-Rhyne freshman attacker Joe Buduo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) added five scores – four in the second half – as the Bears won the league regular season title for the second time in three seasons.
Sterling scored the first three goals of the game as the Bears held a 6-1 advantage at halftime and never looked back.
The Railsplitters were led by Billy Kopsky (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Kyle Arcuri (Patchoque, N.Y.) with two goals each in the setback.
Lenoir-Rhyne held a 47-36 edge in shots taken while junior attacker Mike Hanlon (Haymarket, Va.) totaled two scores and two assists and increased his team-leading goal total to 33 on the year.
In goal, the Bears' sophomore Ryan Crompton (Frederick, Md.) earned the victory after stopping 15 shots while Lincoln Memorial's Joe Medel (Virginia Beach, Va.) made nine saves despite the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 23, in Salisbury, N.C., when the Bears take on Catawba in a South Atlantic Conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m. Lincoln Memorial hosts Coker in a league game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
