Anderson Softball Forces South Atlantic Conference Doubleheader Split With Lenoir-Rhyne

Anderson, S.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne (35-9, 12-2) and Anderson (26-14, 6-8) split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Trojans Complex. 

The Bears shut out the Trojans, 2-0, in the first contest but Anderson rallied to win the nightcap by a 12-11 score.

Game One – Lenoir-Rhyne 2,
Anderson 0
Lenoir-Rhyne senior Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) threw a two-hit shutout while junior catcher Sarah Kenley (Charlotte, N.C.) hit a solo home run to lead the Bears to the win.

Hoskins struck out nine batters for her third shutout of the year while freshman outfielder Erin Boone (Creedmoor, N.C.) drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning for what would prove to be the game-winning run.

Anderson's Randee Bettis (Hull, Ga.) fell to 5-5 after suffering the loss.

Game Two – Anderson 12,

Anderson's Augie Pena (Geneva, Ala.) hit a walk-off, three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as the Trojans rallied to salvage the split.

Trailing by a 9-5 score, the Bears scored six runs in their half of the seventh highlighted by a game-tying, three-run home run from sophomore shortstop Madison Carter (Bessemer City, N.C.) but couldn't hold the lead.

Lenoir-Rhyne junior outfielder Dakota Keller (Mooresboro, N.C.) hit a three-run home run earlier in the contest while Boone totaled three hits and two runs batted in despite the loss.  Hoskins (12-6) was tagged with the loss.

For Anderson, Pena totaled four runs batted in while Cailah Niles (Phenix City, Ala.) and Rachael Barefield (Opelika, Ala.) hit home runs in the victory.  Pena (10-4) was credited with the win.

Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to host Coker in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Bears Field beginning at 4:00 p.m.  Anderson next hosts Tusculum in a league doubleheader on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
