Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (3-1-1) rallied with two unanswered goals in the second half to defeat Belmont Abbey (2-1-1), 2-1, in a non-conference regional affair Wednesday night at the Moretz Sports – Athletic Complex.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior defender Dylan Bedell (Chapel Hill, N.C.) scored the match-winner in the 84th minute after heading the ball into the net off a long pass from senior defender Jessica Feronti (Melbourne, Fla.), who was credited with the assist.
Belmont Abbey scored just 5:08 into the contest on a goal by Tallee Zamiela (Stuart, Fla.) but Lenoir-Rhyne kept the Crusaders off the board the rest of the way.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which hasn't seen defeat since its season opener close to two weeks ago, tied the score when freshman forward Maialen Herreros (Bilbao, SPAIN) put a rebounded save into the net at the 49:18 mark of the second half. Senior forward Kendall Smith (Asheville, N.C.) earned the assist on the play for the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior goalkeeper Andrea Leano (San Diego, Calif.) picked up the win while Kaitlyn Paul (Fleming Island, Fla.) made six saves in goal but suffered the loss. Lenoir-Rhyne also held a 16-5 advantage in shots taken.
Lenoir-Rhyne will face Tusculum on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., to open South Atlantic Conference play in Greeneville, Tenn. Belmont Abbey plays at Limestone on Saturday in a Conference Carolinas contest at 7:30 p.m.
