Greeneville, Tenn. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (3-1-2, 0-0-1) gave up two late goals to Tusculum (3-2-2, 1-0-1) in a 2-2 tie after two overtimes in the South Atlantic Conference opener for the Bears Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior forward Sarah Pullman (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman midfielder Abigael McGarel (Morristown, Tenn.) scored for the Bears at the 57:11 and 71:16 marks of the second half, respectively, as the Bears appeared to be in control.
McGarel gave Lenoir-Rhyne a 2-0 edge after taking advantage of a saved shot by senior forward Kendall Smith (Asheville, N.C.), who was credited with the assist.
However, Tusculum rallied with goals by Katja Anderson (Enstaberga, SWEDEN) and Rachel Roberts (Lexington, Ky.) to force overtime. Roberts' goal came with 54 seconds remaining in the second half.
Neither team could score in the two, ten-minute overtimes. Both goalkeepers – Lenoir-Rhyne senior Andrea Leano (San Diego, Calif.) and Tusculum's Miriah Martin (Roanoke, Va.) – allowed just two goals in 110 minutes of action. Leano made four saves while Martin stopped five shots on the afternoon.
The shots were also deadlocked at 14 and all four goals came in the second half of action.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Catawba on Wednesday in a South Atlantic Conference match on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m., at the Moretz Sports – Athletic Complex. The Bears will honor all Emergency Responders as part of the contest. Tusculum travels to Harrogate, Tenn., to take on Lincoln Memorial in a league match Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.
