Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Wins South Atlantic Conference Showdown, 1-0 Over No. 14 Carson-Newman

Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (5-2-2, 2-1-1) stayed in the South Atlantic Conference race with a 1-0 victory over Carson-Newman (7-2, 3-1) Wednesday night in a key league battle at the Moretz Sports – Athletic Complex.

Senior forward Kendall Smith (Asheville, N.C.) scored the lone goal of the match at the 73:57 mark of the second half in the victory for the Bears.

The Eagles, ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division II, saw their five-match winning streak come to an end as well.

Smith scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year after receiving a pass from senior defender Jessica Feronti (Melbourne, Fla.) and running the ball down the right side and shooting past the goalkeeper for the score.  Feronti was credited with the assist.

Lenoir-Rhyne senior goalkeeper Andrea Leano (San Diego, Calif.) picked up second shutout victory of the year.  Leano made six saves while Carson-Newman's Jacqueline Burns (Cookstown, NORTHERN IRELAND) suffered the loss in goal despite allowing just one score with five saves.

Carson-Newman held a 13-11 advantage in shots taken in the setback as well.

Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Queens in a league match on Saturday night at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex beginning at 7:30 p.m.  Carson-Newman returns home to take on Anderson Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
