Hickory, N.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne University (1-1-1) and the University of North Georgia (2-0-1) fought to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action and two overtimes Wednesday evening at the Moretz Sports – Athletic Complex.
North Georgia, ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II, opened the scoring just 5:51 into the match when Rachel VanHorn (Marietta, Ga.) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season off a breakaway after taking control off a loose ball and a misplay by a defender.
Lenoir-Rhyne tied the score in the 51st minute when freshman midfielder Aqsa Mushtaq (Bradford, ENGLAND) made a couple of moves just outside the box and found the back of the net for her first goal as a Bear.
Both squads were left off the board the rest of the way. Both goalkeepers – North Georgia's Kaitlyn Siberski (Hockessin, Del.) and Lenoir-Rhyne senior Andrea Leano (San Diego, Calif.) – allowed just one goal in 110 minutes of action.
Siberski made five saves in the contest while Leano stopped eight Nighthawk shots on the evening. Lenoir-Rhyne also held a 19-15 advantage in shots taken in the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home to face USC Aiken on Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m., at the Moretz Sports – Athletic Complex. North Georgia hosts Georgia College in a Peach Belt Conference match on Saturday, September 17, at 3:00 p.m.
