Hickory, N.C. – The Catawba Baseball Team (13-4, 5-1) won in a pitchers' duel over Lenoir-Rhyne (14-5, 3-3), 1-0, in a South Atlantic Conference game Sunday afternoon at Bears Field.
The Indians scored the lone run of the game when Jeremy Simpson (Cleveland, N.C.) crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the eighth inning.
Both starting pitchers – Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore
Hunter Martin (Stanfield, N.C.) and Catawba's Hunter Shepherd (Salisbury, N.C.) – pitched six scoreless innings while Martin struck out six batters.
Catawba's Cody Fitch (Shelby, N.C.) improved to 2-0 after picking up the win while Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C.) earned his fourth save of the year. Lenoir-Rhyne junior
Landon Whitson (Marion, N.C.) (1-2) was tagged with the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home to face Belmont Abbey on Tuesday at Bears Field beginning at 6:00 p.m. Catawba plays Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla., on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
