LR Baseball Suffers Doubleheader Setback On The Road To Newberry, 7-2 And 5-4

Newberry, S.C. – The Newberry Baseball Team (31-19, 16-8) swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Lenoir-Rhyne (21-26, 6-18), 7-2 and 5-4, Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.

Game One – Newberry 7, Lenoir-Rhyne 2
The Wolves' Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.) drove in two runs while Evan Estridge (Chapin, S.C.) improved to 5-2 on the year after allowing just one run while striking out six batters in six innings of work.

Lenoir-Rhyne senior catcher Garrett Vaughn (Charlotte, N.C.) hit a solo home run and totaled two hits while sophomore outfielder and third baseman Zach Jacobs (Moncks Corner, S.C.) added an RBI in the setback.  Lenoir-Rhyne junior Landon Whitson (Marion, N.C.) fell to 2-5 after taking the loss.

Game Two – Newberry 5, Lenoir-Rhyne 4 (eight innings)
The Wolves rallied from a 4-0 deficit to complete the sweep of the Bears.  Olenchuk scored on Daymon Totherow's (Danville, Va.) walk-off single with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Lenoir-Rhyne freshman outfielder Brandon Lam (Bradenton, Fla.) hit a grand slam in the top of the second inning in the losing effort.

Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Tad Ratliff (Taylorsville, N.C.) (0-3) suffered the loss while Tomas Sorcia (Saluda, S.C.) improved to 2-0 on the year after pitching two scoreless in relief for Newberry.

Lenoir-Rhyne closes out the regular season on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., against UNC Pembroke at Bears Field.  Newberry will be the third seed in the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship which begins on Thursday, April 27, at Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tenn.
