Salisbury, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Lacrosse Team (11-7) defeated Catawba (13-5), 14-10, in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Championship Tuesday night at Shuford Stadium.
The Bears, the fifth seed in the tournament, will now take on top-seeded and eighth-ranked Queens (14-3) Friday afternoon in the semifinals at 4:00 p.m., in Charlotte, N.C. The Indians were the fourth seed.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior attacker
Torrey Schwitkis (San Diego, Calif.) led all scorers with six goals and two assists as the Bears avenged a 12-11 overtime loss to the Indians last Saturday in the regular season finale at home.
Catawba's Imani Grays (Greensboro, N.C.) finished with a team-high three goals in the losing effort.
Lenoir-Rhyne and Catawba were tied at three-all before the Bears took control by scoring five straight goals to take an 8-3 advantage into intermission. From there, Indians couldn't get closer than two goals the rest of the way.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore attacker
Gabby Sousa (Delran, N.J.) added four goals – increasing her season total to a team-high 48 scores – including three in a row in the final 1:24 of the first half.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior goalkeeper
Ines Flueck (Coppell, Texas) made 11 saves in the victory while Catawba's Madison Anselmo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) took the loss despite stopping five shots.
