Charlotte, N.C. – The Queens Men's Lacrosse Team (10-6) scored with three seconds left in the first overtime to take down No. 5 Lenoir-Rhyne (12-2), 10-9, in the semifinals of the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Championship Thursday at the Royals Athletic Complex.
The Royals' Duncan Smith (Chittenango, N.Y.) scored as time was running out in the first overtime as Queens rallied from a 9-7 deficit with just under two minutes left in the fourth period to take the victory and advance to the league championship game.
Queens, who avenged an earlier loss to top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in the regular season, will now compete in the finals against the winner of Tusculum and Wingate on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Royals were seeded fourth in the tournament.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior attacker
Mike Hanlon (Haymarket, Va.) scored three goals while junior midfielder
Ben Corrigan (Alpharetta, Ga.) and freshman midfielder
Eric Dickinson (Charlotte, N.C.) both scored twice as the Bears saw their 12-game winning streak snapped.
Dickinson leads the league in goals scored (49) while both Dickinson and Hanlon rank first in the conference in points scored with 66. Junior
Ryan Crompton (Frederick, Va.) suffered the loss in goal despite making 13 saves for the Bears, who held a 48-38 advantage in shots taken.
For Queens, Justin Swick (Easton, Pa.) finished with three goals while goalkeeper Anthony Valenza (Mount Airy, Md.) made 17 stops in the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne, ranked second in the latest regional rankings, will wait and see if it earns a bid to the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the first time in school history. The top four teams in each region make the playoffs.
