Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer Team (2-0) continued its strong start with a 3-0 victory over Lander (1-1) Sunday night in its 2017 home opener at the Moretz Sports – Athletic Complex.
Three players found the back of the net for the Bears – junior forward
Ignacio de Goya (Madrid, SPAIN), junior midfielder
Florian Simon (Oberotterbach, GERMANY) and senior forward
Ismael Noumansana (Bamako, MALI) – as Lenoir-Rhyne won its second straight 3-0 contest.
Ignacio de Goya opened the scoring with his second goal in as many matches just 10:12 into the contest after finishing off a free kick.
Simon scored off a rebounded save from Noumansana – who was credited with the assist – in the 54th minute before Noumansana, the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year, rounded out the scoring at the 74:12 mark with his first goal of the season. Both de Goya and Noumansana finished with a goal and an assist.
Lenoir-Rhyne held a 22-14 advantage in shots taken over Lander, who won the Peach Belt Conference Championship last year and advanced to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The Bears also earned a bid to the national postseason tournament last fall.
In goal, senior
Zach King (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) stopped six shots for his second straight shutout win while Lander's Aleksander Holboe (Oslo, NORWAY) took the loss despite making three saves.
Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home to take on Limestone on Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m., while Lander hosts Erskine Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
