The No. 3 seed Lenoir-Rhyne hosts No.6 seed Florida Tech in the First Round of the NCAA Playoffs inside Moretz Stadium looking to duplicate the success of the 2013 Bears who advanced to the NCAA Championship game. This is the first all-time meeting between the two programs.
The Bears went a perfect 7-0 in SAC play with a 63-21 thrashing of Catawba on Senior Day last week. The Bears scored 63 points in a game for the second time this year, both games coming at home. LR ranks No. 17 in the nation and are seventh in the nation in scoring offense at 44.5 per game. The record for points per game in program history is 42.7 set all the way back in 1967. The record for most points in a season sits at 526 set by the 2013 squad but this year's version is just 38 points away from tying that mark despite playing four less games.
Head Coach
Drew Cronic was named the SAC Coach of the Year in his first season at the helm. Cronic inherited a team that won just six games the previous two seasons and has nearly doubled that total in his inaugural season.
The Panthers finished in third place in the Gulf South Conference, trailing Valdosta St. and West Georgia. FIT is led by GSC Defensive Player of the Year J.T. Hassell who finished with 105 tackles from the linebacker position, including a program-record 20 tackles against Mississippi College. Hassell also owns the single-game record for sacks with four against Wingate. Adonis Davis anchors the defensive line and has earned three consecutive First Team All-GSC honors.
The winner of Saturday's matchup will take on the winner of the West Georgia vs. Wingate game. Should Wingate pull the upset, the winner of Saturday's game will host the Bulldogs. A West Georgia win would secure a Second Round home game for the Wolves.
