LR Alum, Hall-of-Famer to be Featured on ‘NFL Films Presents’

HICKORY, N.C. – One might say that Lenoir-Rhyne alum and Football Hall of Fame member Mike Pope is the greatest Tight Ends Coach in the history of the National Football League. Pope is set to be featured on the program 'NFL Films Presents'.

Pope spent 34 years in the NFL with teams such as the New York Giants, Washington Redskins, Cincinnati Bengals, the New England Patriots and the Dallas Cowboys and picked up four Super Bowl rings in the process. He retired on March 2, 2017 after his stint with the Cowboys.

The 1997 LR Hall of Fame inductee has an extensive list of honors in his time as a Bear. The three-sport athlete was a quarterback from 1960 to 1964 and was a member of the 1960 NAIA National Championship team. Pope managed to rack up accolades such as the Lee Kirby award as the team's QB and Most Valuable Player, as well as being tabbed captain of the team in the 1963 season. In 1964 he was given the honor of "Who's Who in American Colleges" and was recognized as one of the "Outstanding Young Men in America" in 1975.

NFL Legend Bill Parcells spoke highly of the former Bear in saying, "Mike Pope was a respected teacher with an exemplary work ethic and an ability to think outside the box like nobody else."
